Two weeks of story. One download morning. The Pour Over sitting above the New York Times.
The Mission
The app is already live. It gets about 300 organic downloads a day. So this isn't a launch, it's a reveal: two weeks of story, then everyone downloads on the same morning (Tuesday, September 1 at 7:24am) and we climb the news charts past CNN, the WSJ, and the NYT. In public. With a scoreboard.
The public frame
The apps at the top of the news charts are built on outrage and fear. Let's put one there that's built on hope. Let's make the #1 news app Christian.
Here's why this works: App Store category rank is a velocity chart. It rewards recent download rate, not lifetime downloads. We don't have to out-download the Times' history. We just have to out-download their Tuesday.
Why we believe it
The Story
Jason (our real CEO, playing himself) gives Sam an impossible assignment: make The Pour Over the #1 news app. Sam spirals. Drastic measures, 3am whiteboards, a full meltdown documented daily on our socials. And in her darkest moment she turns to Shadrach: her Yoda. A deadpan, slightly creepy, weirdly wise squirrel sage (full quality mascot costume) who has clearly been waiting for her to ask.
Shadrach's wisdom is the reveal: "You can't out-download the New York Times alone. But 1.5 million friends can." On September 1 the audience stops watching the story and finishes it. The download button is the climax.
Tone guardrail (don't edit this away): chaotic-wholesome. Sam carries the crazy. Shadrach stays kind. The absurdity lives in the situation, never in meanness. Duolingo energy, Pour Over heart. The social team owns the episode-by-episode beats inside this frame.
The Mechanic
We open by admitting the app exists and asking people NOT to download it. Yet. The one ask: join the list. A landing page with a countdown to Sept 1 at 7:24am captures email/phone so we can squeeze the whole audience into one morning.
The Scoreboard
During the challenge window we run a live chart tracker. Each app we pass gets a celebration post and a milestone unlock (Shadrach lore, a Jason stunt, a surprise for the list). Framed this way we win publicly at every rung. #1 just makes it legendary.
US App Store, Magazines & Newspapers, Top Free. Order is illustrative; we track it live during the window. Bonus scoreboards: the News category and the overall Top 100.
The Calendar
| When | Beat |
|---|---|
| Pre-Aug 18 | Confirm/switch the app's primary category to Magazines & Newspapers (ships with a version release). Build the landing page and the list. Shoot the flagship costume video. Pull current D1/D7 retention so we know our baseline is healthy. |
| Tue Aug 18 | Campaign opens: "We built an app we don't want you to download... yet." Countdown page live. "Comment SHADRACH" funnels on socials. |
| Aug 18-31 | Daily Sam/Shadrach episodes on the main TPO handles. Podcast squirrel-interruption bits point to show notes, show notes point to the landing page. The flagship mascot stunt drops mid-countdown as our big viral swing. |
| Fri Aug 28 | Paid install ads on (D-5). Warm audiences and lookalikes. Heaviest spend Aug 30 through Sept 3 so paid stacks into the window instead of ahead of it. |
| Tue Sept 1 7:24am | Go. The list gets the signal, the broken email hits all 1.5M later that morning, socials and podcast all point at one button. Challenge window opens. |
| Sept 1-3 | Live chart tracker. Milestone unlocks as we pass CNN, then WSJ, then NYT. Day 2 "rate the app" push. Shadrach victory content staged and ready. |
| Sept 4+ | Victory lap (or "so close, one more push"), retro, and the parked ideas get their turn. |
Channels
Every episode posts on our existing IG/TikTok so our followers feed the algorithm from day one and every viewer is one tap from the funnel. Shadrach gets a small account that never posts. It only replies (and occasionally leaves one unhinged comment on a NYT post).
List wave at 7:24am, full-list broken email later that morning. The coral box carries the mission.
Shadrach noises break into intros. Show notes explain, and link to the countdown. 110K monthly reach warmed up before D-day.
Install campaigns from Aug 28 on warm + lookalike targeting. We'll accept some low-quality installs for the velocity boost, but we stay off broad targeting so the paid cohort doesn't drag retention down.
